Biography

Hsing-Chwen (Giselle) Hsin is the winner of the prestigious Chappell Gold Medal in 1987 from the Royal College of Music in London, and a winner at the International Mozart Bicentenary Piano Competition of Asia. She has performed solo recitals and concertos in England, Holland, United States, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. Aside her soloist career, she performed as a duo with Yehudi Menuhin at the age of 17, and has since collaborated with internationally renowned instrumentalists such as violinist Cho-Liang Lin, Qian Zhou, Christophe Boulier, James Buswell and Nai-Yuan Hu; violist Hsin-Yun Huang; cellist Gary Hoffman and Antonio Lysy; pianist Pi-Hsien Chen and Tomer Lev. Her 1996 recording of Mozart, Ravel and Chopin published by Decca Records of Taiwan has won her critical acclaim and resulted in the selection of the Editor's Choice in the All Music Magazine. Her most recent set of recordings published by NCTU Press in 2006 includes her own essay on the program From Bach and Mozart to Chopin: a Retrospective Chopin Appoach.

She has further given recitals and concerto performances on the east and the west coast of the United States. Her performances have been broadcast on the National Public Radio and on cable television programs. At the Tanglewood Music Festival in 1993 and 1994, she was a fellow and recipient of a special award for her outstanding performances of music from the Classic period to the 20th Century. In her native Taiwan, she has been honored by the President of the country to perform at the Presidential Hall Concert in 1994. She frequently performs recitals in Taiwan, and has been soloist with major orchestras there. She has also played concertos with the Guildhall String Ensemble, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Guangzhou and Hunan Symphonies in the East; and the Santa Barbara Symphony, South Shore Symphony, Stony Brook Orchestra, and Augustus Symphony in the United States .

Hsing-Chwen Hsin received her early musical training in Taiwan. She left the country at age 13 to attend the Yehudi Menuhin School in England, and later, the Royal College of Music in London. She further studied in the United States at UCLA and SUNY Stony Brook, gaining MFA and DMA degrees respectively, and gaining most awards and scholarships there. Among her teachers were Louis Kentner, Simon Nicholls, Vlado Perlemuter, Kendall Taylor, Andras Schiff, Aube Tzerko, and Gilbert Kalish. Since 1999 she has been a Piano Professor of the Institute of Music, National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, which she directed in 2004-2008 and now chairs the graduate performance program. In 2005 she founded the reputable ChiaoTa Chamber Ensemble, performing annually with her colleagues.
