Flights of Sound Event

Flights of Sound was commissioned as the final event for the Tatton Park Biennial, a major contemporary art event held in the grounds and mansion of one of the Northwest's most splendid stately homes. Staff and students from Southampton have been researching at Tatton Park, which is owned by the National Trust and managed by Cheshire East Council, for the past three years. The 2012 edition of the Biennial celebrated our increased understanding of the house's musical activities by commissioning a new work - Aura Satz's film Sound Ornaments in the Music Room - which takes inspiration from the life and music of Elizabeth Sykes (1777-1853), a former resident of Tatton Park whose extensive music collection still graces the Mansion's shelves. The film was installed in the fireplace of Tatton Park's elaborate Music Room during the Biennial (May-September 2012), and provided the springboard for the live performance/installation that brought the Biennal to a close, produced in collaboration with colleagues at the Royal Northern College of Music. Flights of Sound explores the Tatton Park Biennial 2012 theme - Flights of Fancy - by taking us into the realm of fanciful ornament, and asking how we can use the past to inspire new flights of invention.
