Event details

The opening concert of the autumn lunchtime concert series.

The Workers Union Ensemble return to the Turner Sims to present the first performance in their PRS for Music Foundation funded 'Constructing a Repertoire' tour. The ensemble features the unique instrumentation of oboe, saxophone, piano, double bass and two percussionists and is conducted by Southampton Lecturer in Composition Ben Oliver. The group specialises in working with composers to enable and promote the performance of new works written especially for the group.

The unusual line-up of the ensemble has elicited a wide range of responses from composers since forming in 2008, and concert highlights include performances at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Sounds New Festival and the Nonclassical Club Night.

This concert will feature new works by Joe Cutler, Daniel Saleeb and Composer-in-Association Matthew Kaner alongside pieces by Laurence Crane and Southampton’s Matthew Shlomowitz. Students from the University of Southampton’s music department will join the ensemble for a special performance of Larry Polanksy’s Ensembles of Note.
