Lutenist and composer John Dowland epitomises the spirit of melancholy,so fashionable in the Elizabethan period. In addition to the famous lute songs, Dowland¹s Lachrimae was a set of seven pavanes for five viols and lute, each derived from the lute song Flow my tears.
