Richard Wistreich
narrator

Theatre of the Ayre
Rosanna Wicks

Mark Dobell tenor
Robert MacDonald bass
Elizabeth Kenny theorbo

John Milton wrote words for Comus; Henry Lawes composed the music. Theirs was a close and adventurous partnership. Cut Down Comus features all the surviving Henry Lawes songs, instrumental pieces by William Lawes, extracts from Milton’s text and gives a good impression of the original visual effects (Professor Maria Hayward has selected images for projection). If you enjoyed Liz Kenny’s Masque of Moments in Turner Sims back in 2008 or Acteon last Christmas, don’t miss this.

The 6th biennial conference of the Society for Renaissance Studies is happening in Southampton next month, attracting delegates from all over the world. It’s a prestigious gathering. The conference organisers asked Turner Sims to work with Elizabeth Kenny and Theatre of the Ayre on a special programme showcasing C17 English music and placing it in wider cultural context: Cut Down Comus is the result. You are warmly invited to attend.

Tickets: £10, concessions and Friends of Turner Sims £5
Available from the Turner Sims Box Office.
