Dreams of Germany Event

On 5-7 February 2015, the German Historical Institute London, one of a group of Humanities research institutes in Europe and further afield funded by the Max-Weber Stiftung and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), will be hosting a conference on constructions of Germany in music in the modern era. The conference is co-organised by Southampton academics Neil Gregor (History) and Tom Irvine (Music). The conference will feature over 20 speakers from history, music and literature departments in Europe, Asia and North America. Together they will discuss topics from taking the (open-topped!) train to Wagner’s Bayreuth through the Franconian countryside, emigrants singing Lieder in pre-war London, the Ring of the Niebelungen in Tokyo ca. 1900 to the transnational world of Electronic Dance Music in today’s multi-cultural Berlin. The keynote speakers will be Celia Applegate (History, Vanderbilt University), one of the world’s foremost authorities on music and German national identity and Berthold Hoeckner (Music, University of Chicago), who, following influential work on German Romanticism has now turned his attention to constructions of musical ‘German-ness’ in post-war cinema.
