Event details

The music department welcomes the public to our celebration of the Concerto Grosso, by both staff and students at the University of Southampton.

The Concerti Grossi of Arcangelo Corelli made up some of the most beloved repertory of the 18th Century and greatly influenced George Frederic Handel's writing in London. In celebration of the advancements made in the genre by both composers, our programme will include a piece from the Op.6 of each composer's output of Concerti Grossi. These pieces will be interspersed with a solos and trios featuring strings, oboes, recorders, harpsichord and lute.

Students have been exploring and rehearsing these pieces under the guidance of our Head of Early Music, leading lutenist Elizabeth Kenny. They also participated in a rehearsal run by members of La Serenissima, including their leader Adrian Chandler, specifically addressing matters of authenticity with regards to bowing and articulation in the string parts.

We look forward to welcoming many of you to witness the progress made by our students in this delightful concert.

Free admission - retiring collection in aid of the Friends of St Michaels scheme.
