Event details

Keyboard students from the Department of Music at the University of Southampton perform a range of Mozart’s best-known works in late nineteenth-century arrangements that include versions for two pianos right up to eight hands on two pianos.

The late nineteenth-century saw an explosion in the number and types of arrangement of Mozart’s music that was only halted by the advent of sound recording. The result was a legacy of arrangements of Mozart’s works in various combinations of keyboards and instruments. Keyboard students from the Department of Music at the University of Southampton perform individual movements from the Symphony 39 in E flat K. 543, Symphony 40 in g minor K. 550 and the Symphony in C major K. 551 in arrangements for eight hands at two pianos by Carl Burchard and Theodor Kirchner, as well as the overture to Don Giovanni in a similar arrangement by Franz Xaver Chwatal. The String Quintet in g minor K. 516 appears in a version for four hands at one piano by Ernst Naumann, and there is also a performance of two of Mozart’s piano sonatas (in G major K. 283 and in C major K. 545) by no less a composer than Edvard Grieg.
