Event details

The University's community choir, University of Southampton Voices, join internationally acclaimed vocalist & composer Clara Sanabras as she launches her new album A HUM ABOUT MINE EARS – a visionary song cycle based on The Tempest by William Shakespeare for solo voice, mixed choir and string quintet.

Sanabras sets some of The Tempest’s most famous texts and elegantly juxtaposes them with new songs, inspired by the characters in the play; thus Caliban sings his existential modern-man blues, Ariel is a festival-crazed free-loving spirit and Miranda is victoriously emancipated.

The CD recording also features the stellar talents of Nigel Kennedy and Lisa Knapp.

Journalist Mark Ellen described it as “… an enthralling, colourful work inspired by Shakespeare and roaming through blues, waltzes, touches of avant garde and even echoes of European folk music.”

Featuring: University of Southampton Voices and Romsey Abbey School Children’s Choir (Dir. Marion Maxey), plus string quintet. Conducted by Harvey Brough (Harvey & the Wallbangers)
