Professional Lunchtime Concert Series

Valeria Mignaco is a professional soprano soloist, born in Argentina, who obtained her classical and baroque singing Masters degree at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Holland. She has perfomed as soloist amongst others with Bachkoor Holland and Concertgebouw Kamerorkest, Cappella Amsterdam, Monteverdikoor Utrecht, Orquesta de Cámara de Rosario and Pro Música Rosario under the direction of Gabriel Garrido, Paul van Nevel, Paul McCreesh, Daniel Reuss, Charles de Wolff, Jan Willem de Vriend, Daan Admiraal and Cristián Hernández Larguía. With lutenist Alfonso Marin she recorded a CD of Enlish lute songs.

Jelma van Amersfoort is a Dutch guitarist who plays mainly historical instruments. She studied guitar with Tom Burmanje in Amsterdam and Gordon Crosskey at the RNCM in Manchester, and lute with Fred Jacobs. She is a welcome performer at festivals and concert series in France, Germany, Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands, playing an array of original historic guitars from the 18th anc 19th century. Jelma has for years been an enthousastic and prolific researcher of lost repertoire for the guitar from the 18th and 19th century.

Valeria and Jelma have been making music together (under the name Saraswati Duo) from 2010, and have performed in museums, concert series, in historic conferences, and in 2014 as part of a Gresham lecture on the history of the guitar in London. Their aim is to perform unknown 18th- and 19th century mostly Spanish and French repertoire for voice and guitar, in an engaged and historically informed way.

The programme we are playing in Southampton is called ‘Polo Triste’. We will be performing songs from Spain and France from the late 18th and early 19th century, by composers like Manuel del Popolo García (1775-1832) and his daughter Maria Malibran (1808-1836), by Fernando Sor (1778-1839), and by the forgotten but remarkable composer Pauline Duchambge (1778-1858).

Free admission.
