Professional Lunchtime Concert Series

Piano Play: Power-Up

Play is a series exploring the idea of game and play at the piano. This Power-Up set will focus on the sounds and ideas associated with retro gaming in works by Cheryl Frances-Hoad and University of Southampton composers Benjamin Oliver and Blake Troise.

The new works by the Southampton composers, Mr. Turquoise Synth (Oliver) and Roses are #FF0000 (Troise) are scored for solo piano and bespoke 1-bit pulse synthesisers, which have been specifically designed by Troise (aka PROTODOME) for this project. In Oliver’s work the duet partners are initially isolated but gradually become entwined in a playful and dynamic relationship. Troise’s piece explores the unique technical, instrumental and structural techniques used in Sinclair ZX Spectrum games in a performance environment.

Game On by Cheryl Frances-Hoad also looks at the relationship between human and machine. Written for piano and '80s home computer Commodore 64, it takes inspiration from Game Theory; the two 'players' sometimes take turns, sometimes work together...and sometimes go head-to-head.

Yshani Perinpanayagam is pianist of The Del Mar Piano Trio, company pianist of Rambert Dance Company and performer with Showstopper! The Improvised Musical.
