The Music Department continues to collaborate with Mencap Southampton for their new monthly musical lunchtime experience at their Café Down the Lane. On the first Wednesday of each month some of the department’s performers will be presenting an hour of music for the Café’s patrons at 1pm. This month’s session features two of our jazz, pop and commercial composition lecturers, Dan Mar-Molinero and Andy Fisher.

Dan Mar-Molinero’s career as a saxophonist has seen him work alongside many of the top musicians including Julian Joseph, Billy Cobham and Corrine Bailey-Rae. His work as a producer and songwriter has featured on top twenty singles and albums both in the UK and abroad. Dan is proud to be a trustee of Southampton Mencap and enjoys working to bring music to Cafe Down The Lane and across the city.

Pianist and composer, Andy Fisher has worked on BAFTA, EMMY and Golden Globe projects, including the EMMY winning score to 'Into The Storm', the BAFTA nominated Film 'A Mighty Heart' (starring Angelina Jolie), and the Spice Girls 2008 world tour. As a jazz pianist, he has recorded and released his own album and continues to enjoy a very busy professional career as both an orchestrator and composer.

Today the duo will be playing some classic jazz standards, from Gershwin to Cole Porter and more.

Southampton Mencap is found at 187a Portswood Road, located behind Coffee #1 on Portswood High Street. It is accessible via the access road next to the Natwest Bank with plenty of parking directly in front of the Mencap building, second on the left.

Café Down the Lane has been set up to help people with learning disabilities to learn vital work-place skills in a “real-world” environment. It is reasonably priced and welcomes regular patrons and new visitors through its doors on Wednesday lunchtimes. Our performers are helping support this very worthy project and we hope some of you may be able to do the same.
