The Music Department are delighted to be collaborating with Mencap Southampton for a new monthly musical lunchtime experience at their Café Down the Lane. On the first Wednesday of each month, starting in June, some of the department’s Showcase performers will be presenting an hour of music for the Café’s patrons at 1pm.

Abi Piercy’s love of with the harp started when she was offered a taster session at her school in Oxford. At the age of 10 she began playing the Lever Harp and then moved on to the Pedal Harp five years later.  Over the last few years, Abi has played in venues all over the country including The Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, National Portrait Gallery and Blackheath Halls. She has played as a soloist and as a member of the Trinity Laban Wind Orchestra, Truro Symphony Orchestra, Cornwall Youth Orchestra and more recently Southampton University Symphony Orchestra. Abi enjoys many different types of music from jazz to pop to classical. One of her passions is singing with her harp. She will be playing a mix of these three genres throughout her set, with some recognisable songs/pieces and others that will be new.

Southampton Mencap is found at 187a Portswood Road, located behind Coffee #1 on Portswood High Street. It is accessible via the access road next to the Natwest Bank with plenty of parking directly in front of the Mencap building, second on the left.

Café Down the Lane has been set up to help people with learning disabilities to learn vital work-place skills in a “real-world” environment. It is reasonably priced and welcomes regular patrons and new visitors through its doors on Wednesday lunchtimes. Our performers are helping support this very worthy project and we hope some of you may be able to do the same.

Please come along to enjoy a snack or drink during this performance.
