Event details

To celebrate the launch of the John Hansard Gallery's new building, Studio 144, and the official opening of our neighbour, NST City, John Hansard Gallery will open for a week from the 16-25 February 2018. The gallery will present an exciting programme of contemporary art, as well as an abundance of events for the community.

John Hansard Gallery will host SWEET TOOTH: Perspectives, a series of ‘in conversation’ talks and panel discussion.

Join us for a conversation about Elaine Mitchener’s SWEET TOOTH, an ambitious 50-minute cross-disciplinary music theatre piece encompassing text, improvisation and movement staging a dramatic engagement with the brutal realities of slavery. Informed by historical records, SWEET TOOTH reveals slavery’s contemporary echoes of the sugar plantation. To book tickets to the performance visit: www.nstheatres.co.uk/city

The series of conversations exploring the cross-disciplinary nature of SWEET TOOTH, will include a dialogue between Elaine Mitchener and composer Dr Drew Crawford (University of Southampton), examining the work’s structural improvisational methodology, as well as the historical consultant for the piece, Dr Christer Petley (University of Southampton), in conversation with Dr Pritipuspa Mishra (University of Southampton) to explore the historical material within the performance. The event will conclude with a panel discussion chaired by Don John, founder of Southampton Black History Month.

Tea and pastries will be served from 10.30 and the talks programme will begin promptly at 11.00.

The opening of Studio 144 brings two world-class arts organisations – NST, Nuffield Southampton Theatres and the John Hansard Gallery – into the heart of the city centre for the first time, together with media and film specialists City Eye. John Hansard Gallery is part of the University of Southampton, which will have responsibility for the South Building of Studio 144, and represents a significant investment on the part of the University in the infrastructure, culture and economy of the city.

Studio 144 is led by Southampton City Council and has been supported by Arts Council England through their National Lottery-funded Capital programme, alongside the University of Southampton and Southampton Cultural Development Trust.
