Event details

Presented by University of Southampton

Established in 1989 with an endowment from the Spanish Ambassador, you are cordially invited to join us for the annual 30th Wellington Lecture which this year will be a musical celebration.

David Owen Norris, Professor of Musical Performance at the University Of Southampton, will explore the multi-faceted musical world of the first Duke of Wellington with a number of special guests.

Wellington’s name attached itself to many a piece of music. Beethoven’s orchestral piece Wellington’s Victory, after the Battle of Vitoria in 1814, made its composer more money than any other work. John Clare’s manuscript book of violin tunes contains a jig entitled ‘Marquis Wellinton’, and Princess Charlotte of Wales composed ‘Lord Wellington’s March’, the sumptuous gold-leafed manuscript of which is preserved here in Southampton amongst the papers of the Duke’s valet.

Refreshments: Teas/coffees will be served from 17:30
