Beccy Read: Co-ordinator, Key Changes Music Therapy Charity  - I am a Music Therapist and co-ordinator for KEY CHANGES, a small Winchester-based charity which uses music therapy to help people discover news ways of communicating and looking at their emotional needs. We help young and old who have social, behavioural, personal, developmental, learning and emotional issues. I deliver workshops, co-ordinate with our partners such as schools and hubs alongside writing funding applications for grants. I also run the Martin Read Foundation for Young Composers.

Nick Leigh: Managing Director, Tailored Entertainment  - We are one of the biggest entertainment agencies in the UK, specialising in exclusive representation of high quality professional function bands, musicians and DJ’s. I oversee the recruitment and booking of bands and session musicians whilst liaising with clients such as Facebook,  Amazon, Virgin Atlantic and Wembley Stadium to provide top quality music for their events. I studied Music at the University graduating in 2004 and am keen to advise current students about the world of work and expectations.

Tom Gibson: Managing Director, Blackhill Studios  - I'm a Tonmeister graduate, music producer and mix engineer. I started the studio from scratch, growing it from a project studio to a busy professional studio in the heart of Southampton. My years in industry have seen me work my way up from coffee boy/intern to head engineer and in-house songwriter for studios across the country. I have also taught Music Production, including at Purcell School where I taught a young chap called Jacob Collier! I am also the chair of ‘SoNG’ a group of which represents the interests of Southampton based professionals in the music industry. I am keen to share my experiences and advise with those thinking of entering the recording industry.

Steve Clark: I have direct oversight for Warner/Chappell’s back office operations including contract briefing, works registration, data supply to digital services, client liaison, society liaison, mechanical licensing and royalty processing, leading to the creation and delivery of royalty statements to our writers globally. Management and selection of Warner/Chappell’s agents in smaller countries of the world also fall under my remit.

Ben Oliver: Associate Professor in Composition - I am a composer, conductor, electronic musician and (sometimes) pianist. I have had more than fifty works performed by performers including Århus Sinfonietta, London Sinfonietta and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.  In 2017, I was nominated for a British Composer Award for Jazz Composition for my piece ‘Loop Concerto for jazz trio and large ensemble' which featured Southampton students alongside leading jazz musicians Ivo Neame, Jasper Høiby and Jon Scott. I am also a member and conductor of the Workers Union Ensemble and a member of the PLAYLIST collective who programme and commission bespoke concerts and new music across Southampton.

Valeria De Lucca: Associate Professor in Music - I am a musicologist, I have worked extensively on seventeenth-century music and culture, patronage and funding of opera, the role that women played in shaping the cultural life of seventeenth-century Rome, and the staging and visual aspects of the operatic performance. I regularly deliver papers, give pre-performance lectures and write programme notes on these subjects, and I have recently featured in a BBC 2 documentary on the premiere of Mozart’s Don Giovanni in Prague in 1787. My work has appeared in several volumes and musicological journals including The Oxford Handbook of Opera, Renaissance Studies, and The Journal of Musicology. My article ‘Dressed to Impress: The Costumes for Antonio Cesti’s Orontea in Rome (1661)’ received the J.M. Thomson Prize for best article by an early career scholar to appear in Early Music in 2013.

Andrew Pinnock: Professor in Music - Before working at the University, I worked in the Arts Council’s music department for 13 years, including Head of Music for London, developing national policy and spending tens of millions of pounds of public money – experience on which I continue to draw and which I am happy to share. I continue to play an active role in Southampton’s cultural scene including advising Culture South on policies that affect the arts in the City. At the University, I teach arts management and cultural policy to students across the university, making special provision for musicians. I have research interests in a number of different fields and a track record of publication in at least three: cultural policy, as you might expect, organology (musical instrument design and technology) and early English opera. 

Dan Mar-Molinero: Head of Jazz & Pop Performance - When I’m not at the University, my time is spent as a ‘portfolio musician' running my own self-employed business. I've worked with leading jazz/ pop artists writing hit records both in the UK and abroad (incl. a UK top 3 for Gareth Gates 😉). I have a busy gig schedule alongside writing jazz compositions which get played regularly. I’ve worked as a teacher (as Head of Performing Arts in a 6th Form college), am a tutor for the National Youth Jazz Collective and run SYJO, one the leading youth jazz groups in the UK. I'm also heavily involved in the local music scene and sit on a steering group promoting the Soton music industries nationally - #SOMusicCity.
