Time: 18:00

Performer: Andrew Blee

Programme:

Andrew Blee is a Bournemouth based saxophonist. Citing many influences, Andrew enjoys playing jazz from the 1920s right up to modern day contemporary and smooth jazz. Andrew performs regularly with large vintage dance bands such as The Red Fez Orchestra, small jazz combos like the Tom Belbin Trio, and solo performances for various events. This busy schedule sees Andrew play all over the UK including large dance halls, prestigious venues and small intimate jazz clubs.

After spending some years playing saxophone as a hobbyist, Andrew spent a year at College and then a further four years at University studying jazz and saxophone performance.

When not gigging, Andrew spends time teaching privately, and enjoys running music workshops with JazzSmart, which brings in some of the UKs best musicians and saxophonists to educate and make music with amateur musicians. He is also in the process of starting a new band, The Boogie Bumpers, a 7 piece band to celebrate swing and jump jive music.

With this project, the Andrew Blee Quartet, Andrew is exploring some contemporary music which includes some of his strong influences such as Troy Roberts, Bob Reynolds and Joshua Redman. The set references modern and smooth jazz influenced based artists, but with bluesy undertones. Other members of the band are musicians Andrew has performed with in various projects during his time at University. Together these four musicians take the listener on a soulful, funky, gospel infused journey bonded together by the language of jazz.

'My ideas toil around my life during my university years and the impact it had on me so as to become the musician I am today. Some of the songs will be dedicated to people and situations that influenced me as a music student. I will also be singing about my future outlook, life after uni as well as my feelings about the future.'

These are things I have written in my blog which is dedicated to this recital and explains the theme of my recital with the title: 'Every step of the way...' .
