Event details

Ruth Theodore is truly unique artist and performer, creating charming and humble yet challenging and compelling pieces of original work, fascinating audiences with her gripping honesty and distinctive lyricism. Her natural but deliberate turn of phrase is that of a skilled writer in command of, and having fun with, the idea of contemporary songwriting. Armed with an array of unconventional guitar tunings and an ‘off the wall’ compositional style, Theodore tells stories with captivating vocal dexterity. For her gig here in our Music Department series she will be accompanied by her band of male backing singers, drums, keys, and bass.

Since 2008 Theodore has performed and toured alongside legendary international artists such as feminist icon and grammy award winning US songwriters Ani Difranco and Dar Williams, virtuoso australian guitarist Jeff Lang and US punk folk pioneer Hamell On Trial, for packed out venues including The London Palladium, London’s Bush Hall, The Union Chapel and The Borderline. Theodore has produced and released four critically acclaimed studio records to date, the most recent of which was ‘Cactacus’, a collaboration with US bassist and award winning producer Todd Sickafoose (Anais Mitchell / Ani DiFranco) recorded in Oregon. Since 2016 Theodore has been regularly touring the UK and more recently Italy, with her exceptional band and writing new material, confirming rumours recently that a fifth studio album is to be released in 2020.
