We are delighted to welcome Samantha Ege and Nicole Panizza to perform Samantha Ege’s performance-research project Black Renaissance Woman.

Black Renaissance Woman: Lives, Legacies and Music is an album of piano solo and two-piano works by four female composer-pianists of the Black Chicago Renaissance. Black Renaissance Woman presents their music beyond the shadow of European, Anglo-American, and androcentric historiographies, situating their works in the compositional and performance practices of a notably female-driven Black Renaissance school. The album comprises three world-premiere recordings out of the five featured works. Performed by Samantha Ege and Oxford-based pianist Nicole Panizza, Black Renaissance Woman encapsulates Ege’s entwined research and repertoire in the areas of Black concert traditions and women’s music-making in the United States.

Dr Samantha Ege is the Lord Crewe Junior Research Fellow in Music at Lincoln College, University of Oxford. She is a leading interpreter and scholar of the African American composer Florence B. Price. Dr Ege's performances and publications shed an important light on composers from underrepresented backgrounds. In 2019, she received both the Society for American Music’s Eileen Southern Fellowship and a Newberry Library Short-Term Residential Fellowship for her work on women's contributions to concert life in interwar Chicago. As a concert pianist and lecturer, she has presented her research and repertoire in the UK, US, Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Dr Ege released her debut album in May 2018 with Wave Theory Records, called Four Women: Music for solo piano by Florence Price, Vítězslava Kaprálová, Ethel BIlsland and Margaret Bonds. The album featured the world premiere recording of Bilsland’s The Birthday Party, which led to Dr Ege preparing an edition of the suite, now published by Faber Music. Her latest release with Lorelt (Lontano Records Ltd.), the critically acclaimed Fantasie Nègre: The Piano Music of Florence Price, features the world premiere recording of Price's complete Fantasie Nègre compositions for solo piano.

Our concerts are free but e-tickets should be pre-booked through the Turner Sims box office.
