Event details

We are delighted to welcome mezzo soprano Lotte Betts-Dean, pianist Joe Havlat and Emeritus Professor in Composition Michael Finnissy for two days of workshops and research seminar sessions with our post-graduate composition students, who have written works especially for this occasion.

Mezzo soprano Lotte Betts-Dean is a versatile and dynamic concert artist, whose performance experience encompasses opera, oratorio, contemporary music, art song recital/chamber music, early music and non-classical collaborations. Lotte was Associate Artist with Southbank Sinfonia from 2017-19 and was a Britten-Pears Young Artist in 2021. She won the 2019 Oxford Lieder Young Artist Platform and the 2020 ROSL Competition Overseas Prize and Audrey Strange Singer's Prize.

Joseph Havlat is currently a Young Artist at St. John's Smith Square, as well as a Young Artist of the Oxford Lieder Festival alongside fellow Australian mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean. He performs regularly as a chamber musician with groups such as Tritium, Trio Derazey and Duo Ex Libris. Passionate about modern and contemporary music, he is a founding member and artistic director of contemporary music collective Ensemble x.y.

Michael Finnissy has been featured composer at the Bath, Huddersfield, and Almeida festivals, and his works are widely performed and broadcast worldwide. Recordings are available on various labels, notably NMC and Metier; the latter has released a cycle of CDs to great critical acclaim. His works are published by Oxford University Press. He was made Professor of Composition at the University of Southampton in 1999.
