The show features 5 leading Australian composers commissioned by Eugene: Alex Garsden, Liza Lim, Nina Buchanan, Martin Deal Amo and Thomas Meadowcroft. The event is presented by Speak Percussion.

At the Margins of Enlightenment: Reflections on Antiracist Musicology from a Jewish Scholar

[2022/03/2918:002022/03/29] The business of music historians is to excavate stories from the musical past. All humanities fields, including musicology, are now engaging in a much-needed revision of methodologies--heeding the calls of scholars working on the margins for years--to complexify and diversify the stories we tell. The study of figures such as Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780), apparently the first Black person to publish his original musical compositions, confirms that music has long carried antiracist messages, and engagement with Sancho's work allows us to revise our understandings of agency, authorship, and community in music studies. And yet, Sancho's published letters also raise uncomfortable questions about the marginalization of Jews among even the most enlightened writers from the past. As historians, we must not ignore the passages in Sancho's letters that reinscribe caricatures of Jews. This conversation between Thomas Irvine (University of Southampton) and Rebecca Cypess (Rutgers University, USA) will explore Cypess's current research on antiracism in Sancho's music while also reflecting on the experience of engaging with his published correspondence as a Jewish scholar.

The Mayflower Ensemble is committed to the performance of high-quality chamber music from various genres. As well as programming core works for clarinet, cello and piano the group strives to introduce audiences to lesser-known works and diverse composers. The Southampton-based group has received support from the John Ireland, GEMMA Classical Music and Francis Routh Trusts. Performances include concert series at Music at Beaulieu, Romsey Festival and Chichester Cathedral.

Nicola Heinrich cello

Samantha Carrasco studied at the Royal College of Music. She performs as a recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral pianist with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Samantha is Head of Keyboard at Peter Symonds College, Winchester and works as an examiner, trainer and moderator for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Alison Hughes studied clarinet performance at the University of Leeds and RNCM. With chamber ensembles she has won awards from Tunnell Trust and Live Music Now. Orchestral positions include State of Mexico Symphony and Malta Philharmonic. Alison is Principal Clarinet with the Orchestra of Sound & Light and works regularly with the BSO.

The cellist Nicola Heinrich attended Munich’s Richard Strauss Conservatoire and Indiana University School of Music. She performs in the UK and internationally as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician – including with Bielefelder Philharmoniker and Playlist Collective. Nicola teaches at Winchester College and the University of Southampton.

UOS Music Presents: Camila Cortina Bello | Music | University of Southampton

Camila Cortina Bello is a jazz pianist, educator, musicologist and composer. Born in Havana, Cuba, she has taken the stage in her home country and has performed for audiences around the world. Her music intends to re-imagine the sounds and rhythms of her original Cuban roots through the lens of jazz, classical and world music.

Camila studied classical piano and ethnomusicology in Havana. In 2010, after finishing her studies, she moved to Singapore, where she performed as a pianist and music director for different international bands across South Asia, including Indonesia and Malaysia. She relocated to Boston in 2018, as a recipient of the Berklee World Tour Full Tuition Scholarship, to further her studies in Jazz Composition and Global Jazz Performance.

In 2023, Camila was an awardee of New Music USA’s ‘Next Jazz Legacy Program,’ which supports emerging women in jazz. Since then, she has shared the stage with Paquito D’Rivera, Miguel Zenon, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Dianne Reeves, among many others, and performed at jazz festivals around the US and South America. Her first EP, Sonera, was released in 2023 and it is currently available in all streaming platforms.

Call for Proposals – Royal Musical Association 61st Annual Conference | Music | University of Southampton

The conference will highlight and promote all aspects of music research, whether expressed in words, notation or sounds. Scholars with expertise from across the spectrum of music and sound studies will join us for this event. The programme will explore approaches to the discipline that are historical, practice-based, analytical, theoretical, ethnographic and empirical. These presentations will examine a wide range of genres, styles, periods, geographies and media.

For over 60 years, the University of Southampton Department of Music has been a home for disciplinary innovation. We welcome abstract proposals that intersect with our current research strengths, which include: community music, cultural economics, opera studies, gender, queer musicology and theory, performance, composition, creative music production, sound art, GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives and museums), ethnomusicology, imperial and global music history, music education and social justice, and music, AI and sustainability. We plan to create sessions based on broad topics (e.g. music and maternity, music and activism, humour in music) that allow exchange between creative practice (such as performance and composition) and musicological research. We welcome provocative, speculative and big picture ‘think-pieces’.*

The Department of Music at the University of Southampton is home to the Centre for Music Education and Social Justice and the AHRC Hub for Public Engagement with Music Research. Both of these prioritise collaborative research with stakeholders outside of academia. We warmly invite proposals that include and engage with those who benefit from music research broadly defined, including composers and performers outside of the academy and members of our communities. We also welcome work that engages with, and intervenes in, questions of public policy.

The Dent Medal Lecture will be given by the recipient for 2023, Professor Sarah Collins (The University of Queensland). The Peter le Huray keynote speaker will be Dr Marianna Ritchey (University of Massachusetts, Amherst). We anticipate that most of the conference will take place in person, but there will also be certain hybrid elements for those unable to travel. We welcome presentations that utilise sounding musical examples where appropriate.

We invite abstract proposals for the following:

20-minute individual paper presentations (250 words)
Themed sessions (up to 4 speakers, with chair, for 90-, or 120-minute sessions)
Creative practice / compositional ‘think-pieces’* (250 words)
Electronic music submissions (250 words)
Lecture-recitals (250 words)
Poster presentations (250 words)

* By ‘think pieces’ we mean presentations that engage with creative practice in broad aesthetic, technological or social contexts, or research interventions that involve sharing creative processes.

Please submit your abstract of no more than 250 words, or up to 1,000 words for themed sessions, by 10 January 2025 via this MS Form.
