“Ideas and Techniques of Some Modern Romanian Composers” Seminar

The situation of Romanian composers from the avant-garde of the 1960s is clearly defined by their relationship to the official post-war ideology: Eastern versus Western Europe. My intention is to present a frame of some aesthetic options, as well as some concrete examples. I have chosen the most significant generation of Romanian composers, in order to go through serialism (Dan Constantinescu, 1931-1992), ritual music (Myriam Marbe, 1931-1997), ingenious musical structures related to mathematics (Anatol Vieru, 1926-1998), techniques reflecting the sacred Byzantine music (Stefan Niculescu, 1927-2008), postmodernism (Tiberiu Olah, 1928-2002) and "the planetary folklore" (Aurel Stroe, 1932-2008).
