Hi, I'm Leena Rana and I studied BA Music within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

Music has some fantastic lecturers, making learning fun! You study a huge range of different types of music: jazz, pop, ethnomusicology, ‘classical’, also music technology, composition and performance. Turner Sims is also an excellent venue to perform in.

Why did you choose your course?

I felt very passionately about the subject and wanted to learn more.

Why did you choose Southampton?

It’s one of the best universities to study music, but I also liked the sports facilities on campus. Also it has an attractive campus, has a nice library and plenty of coffee places.

What do you like the most about your course?

Music has some fantastic lecturers, making learning fun! Music is a great department. You study a huge range of different types of music: jazz, pop, ethnomusicology, ‘classical’, also music technology, composition and performance. Turner Sims is an excellent venue to perform in.

What is your favourite place to eat or drink?

Mangos Thai Tapas restaurant is delicious, so is the Natraj in Portswood! For takeaway, Shahi Tandoori (Indian) and Fusion (Chinese) are my favourites. I like the wine bar in Bedford place and the Orange Rooms, sometimes music can be a bit too loud in there, though!

What is your typical week like?

Lots of reading, essay planning and organising time management. I try and squeeze in a bit of exercise here and there!

What are you going to do after you have graduated?

NO IDEA! A PhD, maybe.

Anything else to say? Do you have any advice for a new first-year?

University can be an isolating and daunting experience, but keep yourself busy, meet people, be sociable. Be yourself.
