Dr. Azam Ahmad Bakir is a Mechanical Engineering Lecturer in the University of Southampton Malaysia. His research interest is in the field of computational modelling of biological tissues and organs, with the goal of providing a safer test-bed for future experimentation and designing better medical treatment. He has received his PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia.

His works previously involved with the development of a framework for simulating Multiphysics phenomena of human heart, namely cardiac electrophysiology, myocardial mechanics and intraventricular haemodynamic, where the physics interaction is necessary for an efficient heart function. In addition to heart modelling, Dr. Azam is also involved with studying the effect various electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) protocols using computational model, to enhance the efficacy of ECT in treating patients with severe depression. This work could be a step towards a more complex brain electrical activity and discovery of novel technique for treating neurological disorders. He is also interested to explore opportunities to develop model of other physiological systems as well as medical devices.

Research interests

Multiphysics modelling, physiological and medical devices simulation, cardiac electrophysiological and fluid-structure interaction modelling.
