Professor Neil Stephen is Head of Academic Affairs at University of Southampton Malaysia and Professor of Structural Mechanics.

Since he started at the University over 37 years ago, Neil has held various positions including Technical Manager of the Mechanical Engineering Consultancy Service and Deputy Head of School (Education) within the former School of Engineering Sciences.

Before moving to Southampton, Neil was Senior Lecturer at Manchester Polytechnic; Post-Doctoral Fellow at McMaster University, in Ontario, Canada; and Lecturer at the University of the West Indies, in Trinidad and Tobago.

He gained a first class honours degree as a Bachelor of Technology in Automotive Engineering and Design, from Loughborough University of Technology, before being awarded a PhD in Engineering Science, from the University of Exeter.

Neil has had approximately 75 papers published in international-refereed academic journals and has served as a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Solids and Structures; he is currently serving on the editorial board of Vibration.

His 2006 publication On energy harvesting from ambient vibration was awarded the inaugural P.E. Doak prize for academic achievement in 2012, when it was the most highly-cited Journal of Sound and Vibration paper of the previous five years, with more than 125 citations.  In 2017, the same publication featured as one of Google Scholar’s Classic Papers under the category of Acoustics & Sound, within Physics & Mathematics.
