Dr. SeungHwan Won teaches both programming and advanced programming as well as mathematics, random process, and wireless communications. He graduated from the School of Engineering, Korea University in 1999 (BS) and 2001 (MSc)

Connecting everything to heterogeneous mobile networks will lead to substantial change of our world. Discovering how to connect all efficiently will be an interesting journey in our research.

He completed his PhD in the area of Wireless Communications at the University of Southampton in 2008, under the supervision of Prof. Lajos Hanzo. The title of his thesis was “Initial Synchronisation in the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Aided Single- and Multi-Carrier DS-CDMA as well as DS-UWB Downlink”. SeungHwan has broad industrial engineering experience, with employment both at LG Electronics R&D (2001-2004) and Samsung, S. Korea (2008-2013) where he held the position of Senior Engineer in the Modem Team, Digital Media & Communications Business. He has published 14 journal papers and is associated with 21 US patents.

Research interests

  • Optimal synchronisation in diverse MIMO-aided single and multicarrier communications
  • Diverse beam tracking and alignment schemes designed for MIMO-aided millimetre-wave mobile broadband
  • Adaptive beamforming and spatial multiplexing schemes in user-centric mobile communication systems
  • Application of Bayesian inference based machine learning in diverse future mobile communication systems

1. Theoretical Analysis of Optimal Synchronisation for 5G Millimetre Wave Communications

We propose to provide theoretical analysis of optimal synchronisation for 5G millimetre Wave (mmW) communications and conduct performance comparisons of both standalone and microwave-overlaid mmW communications in terms of mean synchronisation time.

2. Adaptive Beamforming and Spatial Multiplexing Schemes for 5G Millimetre Wave Mobile Communication Systems

We would like to delve deeply into main characteristics of adaptive beamforming and spatial multiplexing schemes and their strategies for 5G mmW mobile communication systems and their performance limitations of both standalone and microwave-overlaid mmW communications.

3. Multi-Functional Large-Scale Millimetre Wave MIMO Designs for the Connected Information Society (Work package C: Beam tracking and alignment)

The main aim of the project is to investigate and optimise both beam tracking and alignment in order to maximise achievements of associated work packages.
