The engineering programme was really hands-on with regards to project work. This made the course fun and also taught me practical skills that came in useful during employment.

How did you get your current job?

I did a summer internship at Dyson in my penultimate year and got a return offer.

What are your major responsibilities or duties in your current job?

I am involved in the design and development of user interaction features in our new products.

What is the best part of your job?

Being part of a global technology company, it is exciting to be actively involved in developing new technology to solve problems that others ignore.

Why did you choose the University of Southampton Malaysia?

It was close to home and allowed me to experience studying in both Malaysia & UK at a more affordable cost.

What were the best things about studying at the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus and the UK campus?

Malaysia: I really enjoyed the food and the close-knit community of staff and students. It was really easy to ask my lecturers questions. The small campus and community also meant that a lot of students studied together in the library and we were able to help each other during revision.

UK: I love how diverse and huge the campus is which allowed me to meet many new friends from different countries. I also got to participate in a number of the hundreds of clubs & societies available which also helped broaden my network and develop soft skills in communications and marketing.

What did you most enjoy about your degree programme?

The engineering programme was really hands-on with regards to project work. This made the course fun and also taught me practical skills that came in useful during employment.

How did the University help prepare you for employment?

There were lots of career fairs, talks and CV workshops which gave us the opportunity to ask questions and be prepared for interviews.

What advice would you give to current students to help them secure their first job?

Apply for internships at companies that are known to provide return job offers as it might be slightly less competitive than applying for graduate jobs later on. To international students looking to work in the UK, it is indeed a very difficult process but definitely not impossible so I encourage you to start applying early and never give up!
