Administrative information for international students

As an international student, there are a few tasks and legalities to consider before you begin your studies in Malaysia.

Banking

What documents do I need to open a bank account?

1. University Offer Letter
2. Letter for Opening a Bank Account issued by the International Office to confirm your status as a student in Malaysia
3. Passport with a valid student visa
4. Minimum deposit of RM250 – RM500. This varies from bank to bank.
5. Indemnity Form. If you are under 18 years old, you will need an indemnity form signed by your parents and witnessed by the relevant authority from your home country.

Insurance

• In compliance with the Malaysian Ministry of Education’s Code of Ethics, it is mandatory that International Students should have medical insurance coverage throughout their period of study in Malaysia.
• Medical Insurance Cover is organised for Full-time International Students by the International Office through AXA Insurance Berhad.
• The medical insurance coverage takes effect from the date you register as a student. The policy is valid as long as you are a registered full-time student of the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus.
• A detailed policy attached with a list of panel hospitals will be given to you along with your Health Care Card
• This policy does not cover Outpatient Specialist Treatment, dental and optical care, or pre-existing conditions. For further details, please refer to the policy.
• An excess of RM 50 per claim is applicable for all medical expenses.
• Reimbursement of your medical expenses can be made when you are required to pay first in situations where your healthcare card is not valid, such as:
  • When you go to government hospitals, non-panel hospitals and clinics.
  • When you undergo Outpatient Treatment that does not require you to stay overnight at the hospital.
  • Hospitalisation outside Malaysia (Overseas)
  • This health care card entitles you to cashless admission to any of the panel hospitals during emergencies.
• Please contact the Student Support Officer at the International Office for a card replacement if you lose your healthcare card.
