2013 is the 100th anniversary of the first Schneider Trophy Race, the series culminating in Mitchell’s Rolls-Royce “R” powered S6B winning the trophy for Britain to retain. It is thus very fitting that Colin Smith is presenting this year's RJ Mitchell
Lecture. He has led Rolls-Royce’s Engineering and Technology efforts since 2005, forging a strategy to strengthen their position in the global aerospace market while expanding their share of the industrial, maritime and power industries.

A graduate and Honorary Doctor of Science of Southampton University, he continues to lead the company’s drive for ever greater efficiency and power delivered in the most environmentally friendly manner possible. Mitchell used his tremendous
understanding of engineering principals to push the barriers back. Colin will describe the technical barriers that Rolls-Royce will face and the technologies they are focusing on to ensure those barriers are equally successfully overcome.

A Fellow of The Royal Aeronautical Society and Commander of the Order of the British Empire, he is glad to show his passion for technology and honour RJ Mitchell and the Society by presenting the 57th RJ Mitchell Lecture.
