Malaysia Campus hosts successful Open Day on 29 March 2014

Published: 10 April 2014

On 29 March, we hosted our second Open Day of 2014. The event attracted over 80 visitors to our Malaysia campus. One third of the visitors were prospective students accompanied by their family members.

Lab tour

The vast majority of visitors participated in the full programme of events which ran from 10.00am until 2.00pm. Most of our prospective students were interested in our MEng Mechanical Engineering and MEng Aeronautics and Astronautics* programmes, while others were interested in our MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) programme and Foundation Programme*. *These programmes are subject to MQA approval.

All events, including our talks, laboratory tours, bus tour and ISV tours were popular and well attended. The visitors were particularly impressed when the CEO, Professor McBride presented our excellent rankings in UK league tables. We are ranked number 1 for Electrical & Electronic Engineering and number 2 for Mechanical Engineering in the UK (The Guardian University Guide 2014) and ranked in the top 1% of world universities (QS World University Ranking 2013).

A question and answer session was also organised for parents while prospective students conducted a laboratories tour. Our lecturers and student ambassadors explained our laboratory facilities to the visitors and guided prospective EEE students through a simple workshop where they had the chance to build a simple persistence of vision (POV) device, using 8 LEDs. They then programmed it using our own programmable board based on a Atmel AVR 8 bit microcontroller. The visitors even had a chance to see our student’s first year project, called ‘flight of the quad-copter’. The visitors were very impressed with the quality of the student’s work.

If you have missed our first and second Open Days of 2014, please join us for our next Open Days which will be held on 12 July and 16 August.
