University of Southampton secures MQA approval to deliver Aeronautics and Astronautics degree in Malaysia

Published: 20 November 2014

The University of Southampton has been awarded full approval by the Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA) to deliver its world-leading Master of Engineering (MEng) in Aeronautics and Astronautics programme in Malaysia.

The programme, dedicated to the science and engineering of aircraft, spacecraft and other aerodynamic systems, begins in September 2015 at the University of Southampton’s Malaysia Campus in EduCity, Iskandar in southern Johor. The MQA approval signifies that the University has met the Malaysian government’s higher education guidelines.

The approval follows successful accreditation of Southampton’s MEng programmes in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering over the past three years. Both of these programmes are running successfully in Malaysia with the first group of students in Mechanical Engineering making the transition from Malaysia to Southampton in the UK this autumn to start their third year of study as part of our Integrated International Engineering Education (IIEE) programme.

Our IIEE, which applies to our degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering, allows students to spend 2 years studying in Malaysia followed by 2 years studying in the UK. This gives students an excellent experience of both countries, whilst graduating with a degree from a world-class, research-led university. It offers excellent value-for-money (at around 40% less than the cost of the same UK-based degree), access to world-leading academics, and an internationally recognised degree – all in a safe and friendly environment, both in Malaysia and in the UK.

During their final two years, students will have access to Southampton’s engineering teaching laboratories and facilities in the UK including the renowned RJ Mitchell wind tunnel, Astronautics Lab & Vibration test facility and the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle development lab.

Earlier this year, the University of Southampton ranked in the UK’s top four in Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering, the top two for Electrical and Electronic Engineering according to The Complete University Guide 2015. Southampton was also ranked number two in the UK for both Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in The Guardian University Guide – the 10th consecutive year that the University has featured in the top 10 for Mechanical Engineering.

“We’re very pleased to be awarded MQA approval for this important programme of study which will expand our portfolio of engineering programmes now available to students studying at our Malaysia Campus,” said Professor John McBride, the Chief Executive Officer of University of Southampton, Malaysia Campus. “The University of Southampton is recognised amongst the top one percent of the world’s universities and our engineering courses are consistently rated very highly in university league tables. We are very proud of that reputation and believe that students who choose to study with us at the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus will receive a first class education from a world-leading institution.”
