Published: 16 February 2015

USMC held their first Open Day of 2015 on 24 January 2015 with a record number of visitors – over 300.

The visitors started their day with a welcome by Professor Neil Stephen, Head of Academic Affairs at USMC, which was followed by a student testimonial video and a talk about the Engineering Foundation Year and the UK experience. The students were then divided into groups depending on their subject preference. Dr. Mihai Rotaru delivered a presentation on ‘Introduction to Electrical and Electronic Engineering’ and Prof Neil Stephen spoke about ‘An Introduction to Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics and Astronautics’.

After the presentation, parents had a Q&A session whilst students attended one of four workshops below:

  • Engineering Design Workshop by Dr. William Chong
  • Structure Lab Demonstration by Dr. Khong Wui Gan
  • How did the small little bubbles destroy the mighty ship by Dr. Jo-Han Ng
  • Persistence of Vision Experiment by Dr. Mihai Rotaru & Dr Low Siow Yong

Year 12 students taking O-levels at 2 different schools, attended a presentation by Dr. Suhaila Sanip on ‘An Introduction to the Engineering Foundation Year’ and then participated in a ‘Centre of Gravity’ workshop by Dr. Grace Chai. The students were exposed to the theory of centre of gravity and explored the physics of balance by trying to balance a canned drink at 45 degrees.

Finally, there was a tour of the Student Village (SV) and the Sports Complex.
