The Students’ Association of University of Southampton Malaysia Campus has launched a mentoring programme to enable foundation year and Year 1 students to do better in their studies.

To drive rich learning, development, and retention for students, the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus Students’ Association has launched a mentoring programme.

‘’Our mentoring programme aims to help students with their studies by matching those looking for academic guidance with suitable student mentors,’’ explained Krystal Yap, president of the university student association. ‘’However it is more than that, student mentors also get to develop their coaching and leadership skills bringing a sense of satisfaction during their last year in our Malaysia campus.’’

The mentoring programme matches Engineering Foundation Year and Year 1 engineering students with Year 2 engineering students to help them navigate the twist and turns of engineering school – deepen understanding of the courses’ fundamentals, meet the rigours of student projects, and make student service a welcome priority.

Ravivarma Vikneswaren, vice-president of the students’ association, supported the programme’s ideals by expressing, ‘’the interaction between mentee and mentor is usually in-person however, considering the time and availability, both have the option to have the correspondence by phone or by email. It is flexible. I feel that sharing our personal experiences with the younger students nurtures a sense of communal success which my fellow association members and I cherish.’’

Welfare officer, Velayuthan Segar feels likewise, ‘’As much as we would like to start big, we want to start programmes that are feasible and bring everyone closer. It’s the little things that make the difference.’’

The University of Southampton Malaysia Campus students’ association 2016/17 is comprised of newly elected members: Krystal Yap (president); Ravivarma Vikneswaren (vice president); Yeh Yang (secretary); Lee Kean Wee (treasurer); Elvin Phang Jun Yi (events officer); Giam Ye Hor (sports and societies); Lennie Chew (communication & marketing officer); and Velayuthan Segar (welfare officer).

To make a real effort to reach out to students, the students’ association’s first project will be setting up a suggestion box within the campus before the year ends. According to Lennie, the suggestion box is for the students to air out their views, suggestions or any other information they feel necessary for the students’ association.

For the current academic year, the students’ association plans to organise social events not only for Southampton students but for the whole EduCity community. For those interested in the mentoring programme, follow the students’ association on Facebook.
