Sri Ram Vengada Ramanujam is among the selected few to win the Centennial Scholarship sponsored by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), UK. The Centennial Scholarship was created to commemorate one hundred years of flight and support the next generation of aerospace pioneers and experts in the 21st century.

Ram, who is enrolled in the University’s split-campus engineering programme, spent the first two years of his Master of Engineering (MEng) in the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) in Johor before transitioning to the UK campus in 2017.

Currently a final-year Aeronautics and Astronautics student, Ram hopes that this prestigious scholarship would open doors for him in the future – to establish a network within the aviation and aerospace industry.

‘’I feel both extremely humbled and honoured to be the recipient of this scholarship. I am also indebted to my teachers who motivated and guided me, and my parents, who also encouraged me to give it a try. Without a doubt, it [scholarship] certainly motivates me to work harder,’’ he said.

The award is decided on the merit of a written application form which Ram expressed his commitment and achievement in the study of aerospace and aviation. Backed by strong references, Ram’s application highlighted his deep interest in noise reduction in aircraft.

Ram explained, ‘‘My third year project entitled ‘Aerodynamic Noise Measurement and Control’ involved research to find ways to control noise generated in the undercarriage of an aircraft. I designed and manufactured a cavity and tested it using a wind tunnel together with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to run flow stimulations. I believe that in the future cutting-edge research and development can help improve standards in airline carriers.’’

Prior to winning this prestigious scholarship, Ram was a Merit Scholar during his A-levels at Methodist College Kuala Lumpur and a High Achiever Scholar at UoSM.

According to Ram, it is his go-getter mindset that keeps him curious and motivated. His advice to students: ‘’You never know what awaits you unless you give it a try! Have faith in your own abilities, work hard and there is nothing you cannot accomplish. Whatever you want in life, other people are going to want it too. Believe in yourself enough to accept the idea that you have an equal right to it. Overall, nothing is impossible when you set your mind to it.''

Asked how he perceives today’s industry and its future, he said ‘‘…the aerospace industry is at the forefront of innovation, pushing the boundaries of technological advancement at an exponential rate. However, there is always room for improvement. In the future, I aspire to be part of a team of engineers who will produce and design better aircraft models to solve contemporary global problems. This award will certainly inspire me to fulfil my ambitions.’’
