Just under five years ago, Shivank Sharma moved across the continent from his home in India to Malaysia. Shivank was to begin his new life as a student at the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM). He had enrolled in the MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme and remembered feeling anxious about moving to Malaysia. He soon realised however, that the transition was smooth as can be due to the friendly and helpful staff and lecturers who had taken him under their wing. In no time at all, Shivank found himself fully immersed in an amazing learning experience. Today, he serves as a Data Science Consultant within Deloitte’s Risk Analytics in the United Kingdom (UK).

The University of Southampton is a world-class British university that is ranked among the Top 100 Universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings, 2019. With a rich history spanning 150 years, the University has seen over 200, 000 graduates achieving their dreams. The Malaysia campus is tucked away in the state-of-the-art Educity Iskandar complex in Johor. With over 92% of its students attaining jobs or enrolling in further study within 6 months after graduation, success stories like Shivank’s are far from unheard of.

Jeremy Fong who is now a Control Engineer with Rolls Royce in the UK remembers the key role the University of Southampton played with his application.

“I found out about Rolls-Royce through the IT, Science and Engineering Fair held by the University’s Careers and Employability Service. Also, I had my CV examined by a practitioner at the University’s drop-in service and attended a mock assessment centre to help me in my preparation for Rolls-Royce’s assessment centre.”

Jeremy had pursued an MEng in Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 2016. Just like Shivank, Jeremy spent the first two years of his degree at the University of Southampton Malaysia before completing the remaining two years in the UK. UoSM’s programmes run on a 2+2 basis with students achieving a top-notch British education at only 60% of the cost. Stephanie Sook Fung Teow, who also graduated with an MEng in Mechanical Engineering said,

“I chose UoSM as it was affordable compared with direct admissions to the UK Campus. Also, UoSM provided the same quality of education as in the UK. Finally, the student-teacher ratio was excellent.”

Stephanie who is a Design Engineer for CCW Associates Pte Ltd in Singapore, fondly recalled how the culture and the environment between both campuses were incredibly similar. In fact, adapting was so easy for her that she ended up in the top 10% of her cohort.

The University of Southampton Malaysia offers a range of engineering programmes, which include an Engineering Foundation Year, an MEng in Aeronautics and Astronautics, an MEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and an MEng in Mechanical Engineering. Each undergraduate programme offers a variety of specialisations that were designed to meet the demands of various industries and trends for future development.

To join the ranks of these successful graduates and learn more about UoSM’s programmes and scholarships, visit the campus on the 26th of January for the Open Day.
