In this presentation the components of the space environment; atomic oxygen, radiation and debris are introduced and their effects on the life of the space vehicle is considered.

Vehicles operating in space face a hostile environment which can either degrade or destroy the surfaces and structure.

In this presentation the components of the space environment; atomic oxygen, radiation and debris are introduced and their effects on the life of the space vehicle is considered.  The University of Southampton has been involved with research to measure the space environment and its effect on spacecraft materials for over 20 years and in that time have designed and flown experiments for 5 missions including the International Space Station and Mir.

The work we have done and the problems of producing spacecraft experiments is described.
