Research project: Lightweight Blockchain Consensus Algorithm for Resource-constrained IoT Devices

Currently Active:
Yes

Blockchain technology has been introduced for various Internet of Things (IoT) applications with the purpose of improving their security. However, there are a number of barriers before blockchain can be fully adopted for IoT.

Blockchain technology has been introduced for various Internet of Things (IoT) applications with the purpose of improving their security. However, there are a number of barriers before blockchain can be fully adopted for IoT. One of these barriers is the complex consensus algorithms that require a lot of computational power, which are unable to be supported by resource-constrained IoT devices. Furthermore, existing consensus algorithms also have scalability issues. The focus of this project will be designing an efficient lightweight consensus protocol that can be supported by resource constrained IoT devices. The project will start with the study of the existing consensus algorithms for IoT blockchain network, followed by the design of a lightweight consensus algorithm, simulation and performance evaluation.
