Research project: Failure modelling of electronic equipment subjected to harsh environments

Electronic equipment is increasingly expected to work reliably even when subjected to vibrations, shock or high temperatures. This environment may lead to mechanical failures of the PCB and components and the prediction of when this failure occurs is not a trivial problem.

One PhD position is available in a project that will build upon previous research at the University of Southampton, with the aim to build simple but highly effective FE (Finite element) modelling software for electronic equipment. This software will be able to predict PCB response and can be subsequently used to predict failure with an appropriate database.

The work will involve: creating and validating FE models of electronic equipment, building a database of typical equipment mechanical properties, creating user-friendly software to automatically create and solve FE models, experimental dynamic testing of structures, and manufacturing component specimens and testing them to failure. Additional work could include experiments on novel particle damping systems.

The work will be relevant for creating rugged electronics in extreme environments: spacecraft launch, under-bonnet computer systems, military grade electronics, aerospace electronics, robust consumer electronic devices, etc.

Applicants should have a background in either: FE analysis, Engineering software design or structural dynamics. Experience in the following areas is also particularly welcome: FE modelling, laboratory vibration analysis techniques, shock, thermal issues for electrical components and/or stochastic FE methods.

The successful applicant will work in the new University of Southampton Malaysia campus, as part of the new group of experienced researchers and academics. There will be a significant amount of expertise and facilities available to assist you in your research.
