This internship has provided me with the knowledge and skills in manufacturing which will be useful for my design module and projects during my degree studies.

Why did you choose to do an internship?

I chose to do an internship during a summer break because I wanted to obtain engineering-related work experience and also to gain more practical skills.

Which company did you choose?

The company I chose was Steel Industries Sdn. Bhd.

What did the work involve?

In this company, I was placed in a department which is responsible for the maintenance of the mechanical components of the company’s manufacturing plant. The project I was given was to operate the lathe machine which was used to roll steel billet into steel bar.  Also, I was assigned and guided to dismount bearings, bearing housings and coupling heads from used rollers, using hydraulic jack and oil injectors.  I was also guided on how to use the milling machine to make spare parts.

What did you learn from your internship?

I was able to gain knowledge on what it’s like to work in the manufacturing industry.

What were the most useful skills you gained?

The most useful skills I gained were learning to operate the lathing and milling machines.

How has it benefited your degree studies?

This internship has provided me with the knowledge and skills in manufacturing which will be useful for my design module and projects during my degree studies.

Has it changed your ideas about what you will do in the future?

Yes, I was able to experience what it’s like to work in a production line. Hence, it has provided me with a better perspective on what I should pursue for my future career.
