Coming from an engineering degree and having now completed two internships related to management, I feel that my horizons have been greately broadened.

What degree are you studying?

I am a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student, specialising in Automotive Engineering.

Why did you choose to do an internship?

I had completed an internship the year prior, and felt that it was a brilliant way to have a productive summer. Seeing that this is the final summer I have between academic years, I wanted to make the most of it and learn new skills before venturing into industry.

Which company did you choose?

Peter Charles Limited.

What did the work involve?

Providing financial solutions and developing project management skills.

What did you learn from your internship?

I developed an understanding for the amount of detail required in efficient project management. Additionally, I learned how to use new software dedicated to marketing and management.

What were the most useful skills you gained?

My previous internship was based in Asia. Having now completed an internship based in the UK, I feel that the most valuable lesson I will take away is the understanding of the different work culture. This has helped me to see how businesses around the world are organised with different work ethics, making me more aware of how global industries are organised both internally and externally. This has opened my eyes to possibilities not just locally, but globally as well.

How has it benefited your degree studies?

The skills that I obtained in project management have been crucial to my personal organisation. I have already implemented some of the techniques from the internship into my daily life. The changes may be subtle so far, but I am convinced that they will help me become more efficient with my academic work.

Has it changed your ideas about what you will do in the future?

Definitely. Coming from an engineering degree and having now completed two internships related to management, I feel that my horizons have been greatly broadened. In addition to looking for engineering placements, I am also now keen to look for placements related to working in consultancy and management.
