I believe that being able to learn and experience different concepts has unlocked many different perspectives and views of the world.

What was your motivation for choosing Mechanical Engineering?

I have always been intrigued by the human ability to reach incredible engineering feats and it has made me wonder if one day I could create something of my own which could have a great impact towards the world. By becoming a mechanical engineer, I would be able to enrich the world with my own mechanical engineering feats based on my own perseverance and my knowledge from all my years of studying.

What are you enjoying most about your course?

Being able to learn new concepts in the engineering syllabus which are relevant to today's world issues and constantly updating to meet the innovative needs of the future. It gives the freedom to students to expand their perspective to a global lens.

Do you have the opportunity to study modules outside of your core subject area, and how do you think they are adding to your experience or future plans?

I have had the opportunity to study interesting modules such as Accounting & Finance for Engineers, Human Factors in Engineering, Spanish Language Stage 1A & even touched upon a bit of Economics and Sustainability aspects of engineering in my ongoing final year group design project. I believe that being able to learn and experience different concepts has unlocked many different perspectives and views of the world. With this knowledge, I intend to strive towards creating a better and more sustainable world through the engineering industry or beyond.

Why did you choose the University of Southampton Malaysia?

It offers students a world class engineering programme and the possibility to experience studying abroad through their 2 + 2 twinning programme. With this a student would be able to receive a UK education and top engineering programme at almost half the costs of a full 4-year UK undergraduate degree programme.

What are the best things about studying at UoSM and the UK campus?

The best things about studying at UoSM is the sense of a community feeling where all students and lecturers have good relationships with each other, and the amazing Malaysian food of course!

In the UK campus, the facilities (both academic and sports) are world class and definitely is the best thing about the campus. Also, as an international student, experiencing different cultures in a university setting gives me the feeling of being an immersive global citizen.

Have you joined any clubs or societies in the UK?

I have been involved with the Southampton University Formula Student Team (SUFST) here in the UK Campus. It has always been an ambition of mine to join or be involved in formula student team ever since I entered university. Being part of the Business & PR team in SUFST has been an interesting journey with valuable experiences that could help me in my future career. SUFST would usually compete at the annual Formula Student UK competition held at the Silverstone F1 Circuit but unfortunately it got cancelled last year due to Covid-19. Instead, I got to experience the virtual version of the competition last year and hoping to experience the competition in real-life this academic year to fulfil an "engineering student goal" of mine.

What networking, employment, intern or work experience opportunities have you undertaken and how have they enhanced your undergraduate experience?

I have interned in the financial services industry at an e-payments company in Malaysia where I was involved in Stakeholder Engagements during my previous summer break. Besides that, I have also volunteered as a short-term staff at the World Scout Centre in Kandersteg, Switzerland for 3 months. In terms of networking in Southampton, I had the chance to engage with the Student Enterprise team and attended sessions on entrepreneurship. Similarly, all of these experiences has painted a clearer picture of what I see myself contributing towards in the future as well as complementing my undergraduate studies.

If you could give prospective students one piece of advice what would it be?

Get out of your comfort zone and do not be afraid to try out new things and experience new cultures. Open your eyes to the world of endless opportunities!
