Dr George Wak presenting a seminar to NAMRIP members

George visited NAMRIP for 3 months in the Autumn of 2017 on a Fellowship from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (funded by the Department for International Development - DFID). The visit was hosted by Professor Tim Leighton and Dr Jim Wright from the School of Geography and has enabled knowledge exchange between George (who is part of the INDEPTH network) and members of NAMRIP. George (who is experienced in the analysis of demographics and geographic information) has been based at the Navrongo Health Research Centre in the north of Ghana since its inception 28 years ago.

NAMRIP members enjoyed a seminar by George hearing about the major trials that have been undertaken at the centre, including vitamin A deficiency, malaria (and the introduction of bednets for infants) and community health & family planning. NAMRIP members were particularly interested in the relationship the centre has with policymakers, in particular the Ministry of Health. George also gave us valuable insights into the challenges faced by Ghana in tackling AMR and, moving forward, their strategies for combatting AMR.

George's advice has been invaluable as we make preparations for our first Global-NAMRIP meeting in Ghana in March and visit to the Navrongo Health Centre for a pilot study of StarHealer
