1st African Biomedical Scientists’ Conference Report published today
Chaired by Global-NAMRIP member Leoson Junior Ssetaba, Makerere University's 1st African Biomedical Scientists’ Conference took place on 2nd March at the Kampala Kolping Hotel, Uganda. Today sees the publication of the conference report, available to download below.
The overall theme of the conference was ‘Rethinking the global healthcare systems. Are Africa’s biomedical scientists well equipped to combat emerging and non-communicable diseases?’ with ‘Antimicrobial resistant infections’ identified as an emerging disease.
In the report’s opening message, Leoson highlights the need for collaborative research and a multi-disciplinary approach to develop solutions to challenges like AMR, a vision pursued by researchers at Makerere University's College of Health Sciences. This ties in with Global-NAMRIP’s approach to tackling AMR. Indeed the 2nd Global-NAMRIP conference, held recently in Kampala, was organised in collaboration with Professor Nazarius Mbona Tumwesigye and Dr Henry Kajumbula from the School of Public Health within the College of Health Sciences.
The conference also saw the introduction of the Ugandan Biomedical Scientists Association, an important step in the path to officially launching the association. It is hoped that the format developed by the team in Uganda can be replicated within other African countries.
