Global-NAMRIP member Timothy Kayondo from Uganda recognised by Royal Academy of Engineering

 

Timothy’s technology Eco Water Purifier is a digital system that turns bones, cassava peelings, coconut shells and other waste into an activated carbon water filter providing safe drinking water. Once installed the unit is entirely powered by solar panels making the purifier ideal for rural schools and clinics where access to water is limited.

 

 

Global-NAMRIP members had the opportunity to meet Timothy and see the Eco Water Purifier at the 2nd Global-NAMRIP conference in Kampala earlier this year. Impressed by the device and Timothy’s achievements to date (the device is currently in use in refugee camps and schools in Uganda), Professor Tim Leighton has continued to work with Timothy, including supporting his application to the Africa Prize. The conference in Uganda was organised by Professor Nazarius Mbona Tumwesigye and his team at Makerere University School of Public Health.

As one of the 16-strong shortlist, Timothy will receive an eight month package of support to help him accelerate his Eco Water Purifier innovation. This includes three week-long residential training weeks, the first being in Cape Town, South Africa this month. Timothy will receive tailored business training, bespoke mentoring, funding and access to the Academy’s network of experienced engineers and business experts in the UK and across Africa.

 

 

Following this period of support, four finalists will be selected and invited to pitch their improved innovation and business plan to a high profile event in June 2020. The event will include an exhibition showcasing all 16 shortlisted innovations. The winner will receive £25,000 and three runners up will receive £10,000.
