Global-NAMRIP attend Parliamentary AMR Reception
Three Global-NAMRIP teams had the opportunity to showcase their research tackling AMR at a Parliamentary reception on Tuesday 25th February 2020. A year on from the publication of the Government’s 5-year action plan and 20-year vision for Anti-Microbial Resistance, the event brought together nine leading research groups sharing their work on the fight against drug resistant infections along with a keynote talk by Professor Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer.
The audience of over 200 people included MP’s, Members of the House of Lords and parliamentary staff, researchers from all career stages and members of the public. Professor Whitty updated everyone on the UK’s progress towards meeting AMR targets before touring the exhibits. He spoke about how we need a multi-layered, multidisciplinary approach to tackling AMR. A strategy to deal with individual problems is required with a hundred 1% changes more likely than 1 large change. General Practice and Veterinary Science have seen huge successes but some areas have been slower to progress for behavioural and economic reasons.
The event was hosted by the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) in partnership with the UK Veterinary Vaccinology Network.
The Global-NAMRIP teams invited to the event were:
Professor Timothy Leighton, Maryam Malakoutikhah and Yvonne Richardson represented Global-NAMIRP and the various research projects underway including Liquid Acoustic Stream Technology being pioneering by Global-NAMRIP spin-out Sloan Water Technology Limited.
Dr Merlin Wilcox, Martin Logue, Dr Xiao-Yang Hu, Dr Bertrand Graz and Jeanne Trill talked about the various clinical trials of herbal medicine to reduce antibiotic use including the treatment of lung disease.
Dr Collins Sones, Dr Ioannis Katis, Dr Peijun He and Anto John Kumar demonstrated their paper-based diagnostic sensors to detect urinary tract infections.
