NanoScience and technology at the forefront

The Nanoscience USRG is now incorporated within the University's Zepler Institute - www.zeplerinstitutute.com.

Nanotechnology is one of the key technologies of the 21st century, and a research area in which the University has an outstanding international reputation.

Significant investment in recent years has provided the infrastructure and technological capability for real discovery, particularly in the Southampton Nanofabrication Centre, the Optoelectronics Research Centre and the Institute for Life Sciences.

All these facilities will be used by interdisciplinary groups of researchers focussing primarily on nanomaterials research; nano-engineered atomic and molecular systems; nanobiotechnology; and nanomedicine and healthcare, with a longer-term focus on nanotechnology research for the environment and energy.

We have also recently been awarded a share of the EPSRC £350million research fund for the new CDT in New and Sustainable Photovoltaics. This is a multi-centre team of seven institutions centred around the Hybrid Photonics Group headed by Professor Pavlos Lagoudakis. The aim of the CDT is to train highly-skilled students capable of transforming state-of-the-art research and development across the sustainable energy and PV sectors
