Learning new things

A team of nCATS staff, led by Dr Nicola Symonds (Operations Director of nC2) manned the one of the newest stands at the annual Science and Engineering Day called “Get a Grip”.

Interactive Tribology demonstration equipment, previously designed by Dr Symonds, allowed visitors to perform simple scientific experimentation to examine the everyday: grip, slip and wear. Through play and observation, the visitors increased their understanding of how materials behave, and how friction, wear and lubrication affects our everyday lives. The stand proved very popular with children and their parents. The plan is to be back next year with an additional hands-on-demonstrator focusing on bearings and condition-monitoring. In addition the the Science and Engineering day, the current line of tribology demonstrators have been used for other outreach events such as the popular Dragonfly day and for teaching our masters students.
