MENSUS (Monitoring of Engineered and Natural Systems Using Sensors) is a new initiative centred at the University of Southampton that focuses on system condition monitoring technology and applications and brings together expertise from the University to tackle the system-wide challenges encountered by many industrial sectors. The showcase was split into two parts with the morning providing an overview and speakers from the Government and industry and the afternoon having a technical focus with talks from MENSUS theme leaders and key note speakers from funding bodies such as EPSRC.

The showcase enabled nC2 to exhibit to over 100 industrial and academic delegates in its areas of expertise in tribological testing, surface characterisation and failure analysis. As well as exhibiting, two poster presentations were given by Dr Ilaria Corni and Dr Clint Styles. Dr Clint Styles’ poster focused on TIP@s, a membership based Tribology Industry Partnership aiming to be a one stop shop for industry and operators facing tribology challenges. TIP@S is also seeking to implement next generation solutions drawing from expertise across the university. Dr Ilaria Corni’s poster presented her research in the condition monitoring of rail axle bearings designed around the deployment of a wireless sensor node, produced by Perpetuum Ltd, bolted on each wheel.
