On 23rd November nC2 attended an off shore oil and gas technical group meeting entitled Alloy Materials Offshore: What is challenging us now? The technical meeting was hosted by TWI at Jury’s Inn, Aberdeen Airport and included technical discussions from companies, such as Metrode ltd, Shell, Exova and TWI. The meeting gave the opportunity network with fellow corrosion engineers in the oil and gas industry and determine current requirements for corrosion testing in the industry.

The main topics focused on the testing of corrosion resistant Alloys (CRA’s) such as duplex and super duplex materials and welded line pipes used in off shore environments. Current testing procedures for qualifying materials for use off shore were explained. Problems with the G48A corrosion test which is a submersion test in ferric chloride to determine the resistance of stainless steels from pitting was considered. The with heat treatment of CRA’s and welding tests such as notch testing and impact toughness tests was also discussed. The meeting, which was attended by around 40 delegates, concluded with an open floor discussion on CRA’s to include current issues delegates were having in this field.
