Corrosion Testing

Corrosion is the natural degradation of a refined metal to its more chemically stable form due to its electrochemical reaction with its environment. Corrosion testing involves exposing metals to different environments. Approaches include the use of salt spay cabinets, long term out door exposure and immersion testing.

nC2 has chambers to recreate naturally occurring environments to meet standards such as ASTM B117, ASTM G85 and is also capable of standard electrochemical corrosion techniques such as DC voltammetry, Tafel extrapolation, linear polarisation, zero resistance ammetry and electrochemical noise measurements. We can also carry out investigations to determine the nature and cause of corrosion.

Environmental Chamber
We have the use of two environmental chambers to simulate conditions such as salt spray, air drying and humidity as well as facilities at Southampton docks for long term sea-water exposure testing.
Ascott Environmental Chamber
We can carry out cyclic corrosion tests including, salt spray and salt fog testing including ASTM B117, ASTM G85 and CCT tests such as SAE J2334.
Corrosion samples under test
Samples are tested pre and post exposure for characteristics such as colour, gloss, adhesion and weight loss
Long term exposure testing
Samples under long term exposure can be used to compare results obtained under accelerated testing
Corrsosion investigation
Corrsosion investigation analysis includes sample cross sectioning to determine nature of corrosion
Cathodic Protection Surveys
Cathodic protection is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface that it is in electrical contact with.
corrosion damage
We can carry out cathodic protection surveys on yachts and marine to verify that the CP system is providing enough protection by measuring the potential of the yacht or structure against a standard reference electrode (in sea water this is usually a silver / silver chloride reference cell)
